Asia is a continent with thousands of years of history, with several of the oldest civilizations in the world. So it is not surprising that there are some great history museums in the region. While most people know about the Louvre, the British Museum and the Smithsonian museums, Asian museums don’t have similar name recognition, which is a pity. These are the top history museums in Asia I’ve visited. As I haven’t visited countries like India, Iran or the UAE yet, obviously I’m missing a few good Asian museums. While I’m not saying these museums are as good as or better than the Louvre or British Museum, they are all very much worth a visit.
Tokyo National Museum
Tokyo, Japan
Featuring a vast collection of Japanese historical artifacts and artwork, the Tokyo National Museum (top photo) also boasts an entire Asia wing that features exhibits from across East, Southeast and South Asia. The Japanese exhibits ranging from prehistoric artifacts to samurai armour to “national treasures” are spread across several buildings. This is probably the best history museum I’ve visited in Asia.
National Museum of China
Beijing, China
One of the largest museums in the world, the National Museum of China covers 3,000 years of Chinese history with impressive sculptures, pottery, ceramics, and bronzes. It might feel exhausting but it is a worthwhile journey through China’s evolution. There are also special exhibits, as well as an impressive collection of African sculptures, masks and other objects. Where it falls short is with modern history where for obvious reasons, it only goes up to 1949.
Bangkok National Museum
Bangkok, Thailand
A much underrated place for tourists to go to, the Bangkok National Museum features impressive ancient Buddhist sculptures and interesting exhibits such as royal chariots, weapons, and musical instruments. There is a small, decent Asian section. In addition, there is a beautiful Buddhist chapel and a traditional teak house which you can enter on the grounds.
Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
While the name says “arts,” the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia features much more than just artwork. There are weapons, clothing, ceramics and books from across the Islamic world spanning the Middle East; Central, South and Southeast Asia; and even China. The museum looks modest from the outside but its inside features several beautiful ceiling domes.
National Museum of History
Seoul, South Korea
Another giant museum, the National Museum of History features exhibits ranging from prehistoric times to 20th century Korea. I enjoyed learning about how a Korean state came into being from the unification of three kingdoms in the 7th century AD. The centerpiece of the museum is a 10-story, 14th century stone pagoda in the main hall.
Asian Civilisations Museum
Singapore
The Asian Civilisations Museum features exhibits from all over Asia including China, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The diverse and varied objects illustrate the diversity and richness of Asian civilizations though the museum could do with a little more exhibits. There is also a few contemporary artworks from local artists.
